Notice of briefing on the urgency of phasing out the use of coal in steelmaking

Steelwatch, a new civil society organization aiming to decarbonize the steel industry, held a special briefing for Asian media on July 11, introducing the organization and presenting its first report, Steelwatch. Announcing an end to the use of coal in production.

Asia plays an important role in global steel production. A continued reliance on coal-based production technologies would use up about a quarter of the world’s remaining carbon budget and leave us well off track to limit global warming to 1.5°C. At the briefing, Director Caroline Ashley will discuss Steelwatch’s findings and the urgency for industry and government decision makers to shift policies and investments.

[About Steel Watch] SteelWatch is a new international campaign organisation. Our vision is a steel industry that underpins a thriving zero-emissions economy. We have been established because steel has a climate problem which poses a risk to us all. And urgent action is lacking. Our initial priority is for the steel sector to get on-track with a 1.5 degree warming trajectory by 2030 by pivoting from coal-based steel production to clean alternatives. We contribute to change by exposing inaction, strengthening civil society voice, and challenging corporates to step up to a faster deeper transition.
